Customs office.

I had a very interesting conversation one night that caught my attention post- dialogue. We were talking about this matter of dual citizenship and what it means for someone. Now for many people in this continent, having another citizenship in a country from either Europe or North America is considered a super blessing. But that’s not the subject today. As the conversation progressed, a thought begun to form that I found quite sweet.

Colossians 3:1
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Corinthians 5:20
Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

We can debate and even put forth reasons why dual citizenship is good but what could we be missing out on? I realised that to a large extent we have either completely forgotten about our citizenship from above or we don’t understand it anybit. It’s something we talk about with excitement and that is all there is often to it. What does it mean to be from above?

It’s true that perhaps citizenship from the West will afford one access to greater and affordable health care but this other citizenship declares concerning your health that by his stripes ye were healed and in another place And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. In the former I will get great health care( but not necessarily healing) while in the latter I have divine health both for me and those around me, with no jet lag.

I could go on with more comparisons but that’s not necessary. Scripture is replete with the truths about your citizenship from above. This thing is about knowledge. How much of that(above) do you know compared to this? If you know more about the USA citizenship perks than you do for Kenya then you will crave to be a citizen there. And this is not a bad thing but I think there’s more to our lives than just chasing the things that perish with usage but count for little on the eternal scales.

We have a mandate to execute in our locations wherever it is on the earth. Because greater is he that is in us that he that is in the world we cannot be cowed into feeling helpless. We can’t be so taken up by what is wrong (politics, injustice etc) that we are indifferent to the salt in us either by being too sucked into the despair and hopelessness that only produces after its kind or being in frantic haste to fly out to a perceived ‘better’ place.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus is very rich to every man that believes. The citizenship from above that we carry cannot be compared to anything down here. Our earthly points of location should not get us so worked up looking at and craving what is perceived to be better while unknowingly trading off our unmatched perks. So go ahead and get that other passport if your law allows but if it’s being gotten to furnish and ease the physical aspects of your life then maybe you really need to reconsider the gospel you have heard.
